Amazon Scholars Michael Kearns and Aaron Roth win 2021 PROSE Award

Amazon Scholars and University of Pennsylvania computer science professors Michael Kearns and Aaron Roth have been awarded a 2021 PROSE Award by the Association of American Publishers (AAP) in the computing and information sciences category for their book, The Ethical Algorithm.

AAP unveiled 45 subject category winners on January 28, 2021. A panel of 23 judges selected the winners from among 130 finalists.

“These 45 works all represent exceptional scholarship, and significant contributions to their various fields,” said Syreeta Swann, AAP vice president of programs and administration.

Amazon Science interviewed the two scholars last fall on several topics related to algorithmic bias, and sought their advice for students studying artificial intelligence and machine learning. Below is how Kearns, Roth, and their editor, Sarah Humphreville at Oxford University Press, responded to the news of the award on Twitter.
