Humble Beginnings

The world has dramatically changed since 1974 when Elaine Coyne and a small staff started a collectible artwear business in a small studio in downtown Boston. We packed up our creative art line and wrote orders with pen and paper. We handed one piece of paper to the gallery owner and another to the salesperson who represented our arty cuffs, original earrings, limited edition necklaces and designer belts, which in turn gave us permission to ship the gallery in a timely manner. The reorder level was generally a week to one month. We became an established go-to company for galleries and better boutiques nationally. It was very exciting.

In the 80’s We Got Connected to my Art History Background

We started doing one-of-a-kind patina brass and bronze jewelry and belt buckles. This process was adapted from my studies at Harvard University in Boston, San Miguel de Allende School of art in Mexico and Penland School in North Carolina. The process of coloration on sculpture that costs tens of thousands of dollars seemed like a natural for me.

Elaine Coyne is a sculptor who started business in 1974 and remains an important part of her creations. Her son Sheriden and business partner and manager of production, Richard Turner are in charge of day to day operations. All of our artwear collections are based on Art History and artists. Each piece is done by an artisan that is trained by Elaine Coyne and therefore, each and every piece is done the same way fine sculpture is done with heat, torches and fine sweeping of elements that provide the secret formula that allows Elaine Coyne to stand apart from other designers. No painted patina is ever a part of an Elaine Coyne product.
From Elaine: I remember when we all walked along the beach and we happened upon a magnificent site: a nest of sea turtles one by one breaking out of their shell. I recall the full-tilt experience of us all picking up each newborn sea turtle and placing them toward the ocean edge. And we wondered, would our little helping hand be the gift that kept giving to the world? Would our baby sea turtle make it? And in that vein, I give you baby sea turtles in a delicate fine form, as is their life.
