Earlier this year, Amazon announced the third edition of its India Machine Learning (ML) Summer School as part of an effort to help students prepare for industry jobs in machine learning. Now, building on the success of that program, Amazon is expanding its free ML Summer School to Australia.
The program will provide students with a monthlong structured learning experience that covers the breadth of fundamental ML concepts while also connecting them with practical applications in the industry.
The online summer school, available to 100 students, will consist of eight modules delivered across four weekends in February 2024. The modules will touch on supervised learning, deep neural networks, dimensionality reduction, unsupervised learning, probabilistic graphical models, sequential learning, causal inference, and reinforcement learning.
The free courses are open to students at recognized institutions in Australia pursuing undergraduate or postgraduate degrees in engineering, computer science, data engineering, artificial intelligence, software engineering, computer vision, and machine learning.
Eligible students will have to register for the program. All registrants will undergo a two-part selection test, and the top 100 students will be invited to join the program
The test, conducted from Jan. 10 to 14, 2024, covers algebra, calculus, machine learning, statistics, and probability. The program also offers participants a platform through which to connect and network with Amazon scientists. Each course is followed by a three-hour question-and-answer session with an Amazon scientist.
“Amazon ML Summer School aims to provide participating students with best-in-class training on a broad range of topics that are at the core of modern machine learning, from fundamentals to state-of-the-art,” said Rajeev Rastogi, vice president, International Machine Learning. “The tutorial sessions, covering the right mix of theoretical and practical knowledge, will be delivered by our ML scientists, who are experts in their field. This program will be a platform to help foster ML excellence and strive towards developing applied-science skills in young talent.”
“I found the Amazon ML Summer School to be an incredibly valuable opportunity for learning and networking,” said a student who was a member of the 2023 class. “What I liked the most was the chance to gain in-depth knowledge of key machine learning topics directly from experts. Their insights into supervised learning, deep neural networks, probabilistic graphical models, dimensionality reduction, and unsupervised learning were enlightening. Moreover, the interactive sessions allowed me to engage with and gain a deeper understanding of the practical applications of machine learning. It was inspiring to witness the dedication of Amazon scientists to advancing the field of ML.”
Amazon in Australia
Amazon has research teams located in Adelaide and Sydney. Teams in Adelaide are developing state-of-the-art, large-scale machine learning methods for applications involving terabytes of data. The researchers apply machine learning, and particularly computer vision, across a wide spectrum of areas, such as Amazon retail, seller services, and online video.
Scientists in Sydney are focused on cutting-edge machine learning and data problems related to Amazon’s businesses. Much of the work there helps Amazon Web Services customers accelerate the use of machine learning to solve business and operational challenges and promote innovation in their organizations.
