From Sept. 21 to 23, more than 100 outstanding early career engineers met for an intensive symposium to discuss cutting-edge developments in four categories: Microbes — the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly; Technology and Racial Justice and Equity; Hydrogen: a New ‘Universal’ Energy Carrier for the Carbon-free Future; and Conversational AI.

Anderson, president of the National Academy of Engineering; James Hamilton, Amazon senior vice president and distinguished engineer at Amazon; Prem Natarajan, Alexa AI vice president of natural understanding; and Rohit Prasad, Alexa senior vice president and head scientist.

The goal of the FOE program is to bring together engineers from all engineering disciplines and from industry, universities, and federal labs to facilitate collaboration and to “promote the transfer of new techniques and approaches across fields in order to sustain and build US innovative capacity.”
The program also seeks to help these early career engineers network with each other in order to help them establish contacts among their peers. Those who attended heard a series of talks in the four topic areas along with attending breakout sessions, poster sessions, and other events that encouraged informal exchange among the participants.
