Easy Melt-and-Pour Candles
1. Place containers on a flat surface. Cut wick to length, so that the end will sit on the bottom of the container and extend 4 inches past its top. Tie a chopstick or twig to one end of the wicking. Set the chopstick across the top of the container with the wick extending into the vessel.
2. Melt wax. Add essential oils to melted wax for fragrance, if desired—use 20 to 30 drops per cup of wax.
3. Carefully pour wax into the container, almost to the rim.
4. Allow to set. If you notice that the wax pulled away from the side of the container or sunk as it dried, melt a bit more wax and top it off for a clean finish.
You’ll Need: Heat-resistant containers Chopsticks or twigs Beeswax pellets Wicking Essential oils for fragrance (optional)
Clean
Often, when we think about a healthy lifestyle, the first thing that comes to mind is what we eat. We avoid unhealthy foods or produce that’s been sprayed with pesticides, or attempt to add more fiber and vegetable to our diet. But what about the products we use to clean our bodies and our homes? From lotions and shampoo to laundry detergent and deodorizers, our bodies are constantly being exposed to unfamiliar—and often dangerous—ingredients. Wondering how you can eliminate harsh chemicals from your life while still maintaining a clean environment? The answer is simple: Do it yourself! It is important to educate yourself on proper usage and risk, but you can reap real benefits by exploring the fascinating world of plant-based natural remedies.
Elderberry Syrup
1. In a large saucepan, combine 5 cups water with the elderberries, cinnamon stick, orange peel, and grated ginger. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat.
2. Immediately turn down the heat and let simmer for 30 minutes.
3. Strain the mixture through several layers of cheesecloth into a bowl.
4. Let cool slightly, then squeeze as much of the juice as possible out of the cheesecloth and into the bowl without releasing the solids.
5. Stir in the honey to taste. This is easier to do while the juice is still warm.
You’ll Need: 1 cup dried or 2 cups fresh elderberries 1 cinnamon stick ¼ cup fresh orange peel 2 tablespoons ginger, grated 1 cup raw honey Special equipment: cheesecloth
