Treasuring Your Neighbor

If you watch the news, you would think that there are no answers to all the problems our great country is facing today. However, nearly 2,000 years ago the greatest philosopher of all time gave us the ultimate answer. When a lawyer tried to test Him by asking which commandment in the law was the greatest, the book of Matthew captured the moment in chapter 22, verses 37-39:

Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’”

As I prayed about this month’s Box of Blessings, I felt God leading me towards a theme of loving your neighbor. But, what does that look like? Then God put it in a whole new perspective for me, by placing on my heart the theme of this month’s Box: Treasuring Your Neighbor.

Thank You Jesus

I was having lunch with a close friend and was complaining about a recent incident that I thought was unfair. After listening she asked me, “What’s in your fridge?” I started listing things I could remember and then asked why she wanted to know. She ignored my question and asked, “How are your boys?” I said fine. She asked, “And your parents?” I said, “They’re okay too.” “Is your car running? Any roof leaks at your house?” As she peppered me with questions, I started feeling a little foolish for my earlier complaint.

She smiled and said, “It sure seems like you have a lot to be thankful for!” Which brings us to our theme verse of this month’s Box of Blessings:

“Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His love endures forever.” (1 Chronicles 16:34)

We have so much to be thankful for, yet we often don’t take time to stop and give thanks to the Lord. So this month’s theme is simply, Thank You Jesus!

Faithful Heart

Remember when you were a child what it was like to wait for Christmas? There was the wonder, the excitement, the mystery of what was in those carefully wrapped presents. As we got older, it seems like waiting became a way of life…but without the excitement and fun. Whether it’s waiting in line at the grocery store or waiting at the doctor’s office, all the fun is gone from waiting.

In fact, in our fast-paced world we get impatient when we have to wait…for anything! We even let our impatience carry over into our prayer life. (Did God hear me? When is He going to answer my prayer?!) That’s when we need to remember 2 Chronicles 16:9: “For the eyes of the Lord range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to Him.” Waiting on the Lord takes faith, and 2nd Chronicles tells us that He will strengthen our faith if our hearts are fully committed to Him. That’s why I titled this month’s Box of Blessings, Faithful Heart.

Joy

Don’t you just love receiving a pleasant surprise or unexpected gift? It brings us moments of happiness. But that happiness can disappear pretty quickly if someone takes that gift from us or if we receive bad news. Happiness is generated by an external, worldly experience and is a feeling or emotion that comes and goes.

Joy, on the other hand, is a state of being that satisfies our soul. Joy is internal. Joy is a choice. And when we choose to have joy, joy doesn’t leave us in difficult times. The writer of Psalm 94 described it this way in verse 19: “When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought

joy to my soul.”

David was very familiar with difficult times. He knew where to turn in difficult times. So the

theme verse I chose for this month’s Box of Blessings comes from Psalm 28, verse 17: “The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in Him, and He helps me. My heart leaps for joy, and with my song I praise Him.”
